Glazed Pumpkin, Oatmeal & Black Walnut Cake

It’s October! We can be fall-ish now. ( Yes, you have my permission.)

The last few days I have had a serious pumpkin addiction. Halloween is prevalent on my mind. As are fall leaves and a couple October weekend getaways I have coming up! Read the rest of this entry

Blueberry Pie Cake

Flip flops and high heels. The yin and the yang of womens shoes. And my two favorite types of footwear.  I mostly just want to be barefoot which means flip flops are for me. However, I am really short horizontally challenged so the higher the heels the more like a big kid I can feel.

Of course, sometimes shoes are an acquired taste. I wasn’t always toddling around on 4 inch heels or gripping the thong of a flip flop between my toes. It wasn’t until after college that I really embraced my love of the high heel and as I’ve gotten older they’ve gotten taller. And flip flops. . .well they grew on me like a fungus. I used to hate the feel of that thing between my toes. However, once I embraced the flip flop I realized how awesome they are. They used to be about the only shoes I wore all year round when I lived in a warm climate. Alas, living back in the Great White North means I only have a small window for flip flops.

Foods some times take me awhile to acquire a taste for, too. Generally I am not a picky eater but there are a few things that I had to learn to love. Blueberries being one of them. I love most berries (not strawberries) but blueberries were always the most boring berry to me.

Orange Pineapple Cake with Orange Marmalade Buttercream

Today is my awesome husband’s birthday! Happy birthday, Sweetie! I am a fortunate girl to have found such a caring, funny, thoughtful, hard-working, honest, AMAZING husband. He’s an all around fantastic dude and I love him more than he could ever know.

But. . . he is also sick and twisted. (Which, in all honesty, amuses me to no end!) His birthday request? A pinata. Ok, easy enough. More specifically a baby seal pinata. To club. Yes, a baby seal to club. See? Sick! Twisted! HILARIOUS!

Rhubarb Bundt Cake with Lemon Glaze

Rhubarb is in season. I’m envious of people with a patch of rhubarb growing in their yards. I have none.

I occasionally can glean some from a family acquaintance or relation. Or, I can buy it at the grocery store. $2.49 a pound! That hurts a little. Especially since my mom used to grow a patch when we were kids and never payed for a stalk of rhubarb in her life probably.

Limeade Cake

Last week was my Grandma’s 86th birthday. (That’s right, Grandma, I just shared your age with the world!) I made her this cake.

She’s a citrus girl. Originally this was going to be lemonade flavor for her but limeade is the what I remember drinking at her house as a kid so it seemed fitting to go with that flavor instead.

Almond Cake

Almond cake doesn’t sound fancy. It’s not really. It’s easy to make with things you may already have on hand in your pantry.

BUT.. it tastes fancy! I made this a few weeks back for my aunt’s birthday. It is dense and chewy and buttery and nutty and fantastic. My own birthday is in a few days and I just may have to make it again for myself. It’s that good. (Except there are so many other things on  my ‘to try’ list. . .choices, choices.)

Orange Cake and a Happy Anniversary to Tim

Happy Anniversary to my wonderful husband, Tim!

Two years ago today we had the most enjoyable wedding on the beach in Florida. It was laid back and just right. I’m so very happy to have married my best friend and an all around wonderful man. I love you, sweets.

And as unhappy as she would be with me for sharing this with the world. . . today also would have been my mom’s 60th birthday.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

We lost her 4 and a half years ago. It’s been hard to not have my mom around. Tim and I used her birthday as our wedding date to honor her memory and make her a part of our day. It made me feel better to consider her a part of things for my wedding. I miss her everyday and wish I could be throwing her a huge birthday party for her 60th.

In honor of these two important people in my life, I made mini orange cakes with raspberry filling and orange buttercream.
